One Morning

One morning, while most of our family went for a hike, my mother, one niece and I stayed back at our timeshare, because we were unable to do all that climbing. We sat and talked on our balcony. We read. I watched the clouds change over the mountains in the distance, endless shifts of shadow and light; life’s metaphor, clear for all who wished to observe the nature of nature and the nature of mind to see.

It was hard for me on a certain level to not be out there hiking in the mountains, viewing a spectacular waterfall. It had been a favorite activity for me. Gordon, the girls and I had climbed quite a few here in NH over the years. I sat with my disappointment and gradually watched it drift away with the clouds. Finding delight in the knowledge that the others were having a lovely time in the coolness of the woods, and enjoying time spent with my mom and niece without the commotion of everyone else around. Peace found me.

Can you see the two hearts opening in the last photo? Sitting alone for a while when my niece and mom went inside, I meditated upon the sky, breath by breath, my heart opened as well, so that makes three.

  1. Lovely cloud hearts Laura.

    We will be going on our vacation in a week, to the cottage at the lake. I know I will miss out on some hikes, a canopy walk in the tree tops and some other activities. It is enough for me to sit on the deck overlooking the lake, quietly contemplating the beauty and healing power of nature.

    I am glad that you found peace.

    Cheers

  13. Hi Laura, I want you to know that you have helped me so much this summer, as I read your words and gaze on the photos you take. While my inactivity is hopefully temporary, I chafe at it. When I read the thoughts of your heart, I am lifted.

    "I meditated upon the sky, breath by breath, my heart opened as well, so that makes three."

    Thank you for opening your heart to others, and sharing your peace.

  14. Dear Laura,
    I know it's very hard when you see that you can't do things what you've done before, but see on the other side... you were there, you saw this lovely sky and interesting forms of clouds, and now you share these beautiful photos with us.

    Greetings and I wish you all the best

  22. ahh... i can memory smell those mountains...though skiing comes to mind most. I wish you could be out there too, your spirit one of the Strongest lights. I saw such a cloud formation last night at sundown, there was a mountainish shape with three angular steps up and a man with a sun-glowing halo reaching toward the last step to climb, behind him a large lion (on his back almost merging), behind the lion another man/power beast combo--they three pushed upward as if to to reach the top plateau, and glowed from behind. It was stunning to look up and spy.

  23. My sister reminded me to look up - she sees amazing things in the clouds! I saw your beautiful hearts ... then I read your peaceful words, and looked again. I see so much more! I found several more hearts - and in the second picture down I see a cute little doggie lying on his back!!!

    Thank you for sharing this blessing with us - and for sharing your beautiful heart. :=}

  30. Laura - I'm glad you found peace in the moments amongst the twinges of melancholy for the past. Those twinges are unpredictable and often intense for me. Letting them drift away with the clouds sounds like good remedy.

    Now, the fact that you see two hearts opening up in that last photo is tribute to how you've trained your mind in that way! I don't see them at all but will take your word for it. ;)

    Glad you had moments of enjoying drinking "it" in.
